How to stop customers getting to your web site...




Wegman's is an upmarket US food retailer with a web presence. What better way to present your products than by stopping people getting to your web site. Forcing people to your sign up page. In a previous posting I covered flavoured sea salt. I went to Wegman's site to check on how much they were selling sea salt for. I almost gave up.

It is not obvious how to get past this point on the screen and is almost like presenting your produce in the physical store, covering it with a tied down canvas sheet, and asking your customers to find where they can lift one of the edges to look at the product. This is one of the worst pieces of user interface usage I have seen in a long time... e.g. look at all the occurrences of "Sign In", look at no option to close the window. The only route to their site is to either sign in or sign up. NO options for browsing the site and/or products until your get to their sign up page (or sign in...
