Following on from the recent French football team prostitution news I looked up the 'age of consent'. This was sparked off by the different laws regarding age of consent and prostitution in France and Germany. Someone may know more that I about the legal issues but I believe that the only issue at hand is that the girl worked as an unregistered prostitute in Germany and/or did not necessarily declare her income there. I am sure there are other factors but that is not the point of this post.
The Wikipedia entry for "Age of Consent in Europe" is here.
What you will note from reading this article is that there are some oddities / anomalies regarding the different countries laws. In Gibraltar for example, the age of consent for heterosexual sex is 16 for both sexes. For female homosexual acts it is 16 and for male homosexual acts is 18. The Vatican State has the age of consent set at 12 for both sexes with a clause of the age of 15 if this is within a 'relationship of dependence' (e.g., teacher).
Spain changed their law in 1999 (previously set in 1995) to raise the age of consent from 12 to the current 13.
The global information is here.
It is a point of note that the lowest age of consent globally is in predominantly Catholic countries.
