... that a short while after world oil prices go to ridiculous levels (allowing the sale of oil stocks at an incredible profit) we now have the doom and gloom merchants portraying the end of days for oil... here.

well, the gloom-and-doom merchants are both glass-half-empty AND glass-half-full types. So they would say: it's half gone - horror - there's not much left! But at the same time: half is still there (to be burned) - horror - the planet will be fried to a crisp!
