Kate Askegaard - A Truly Dotty Artist

A time lapse video of the creation of this incredible piece of work is here. Who bought it here. The art prize and some background on the artist here. THe artists blog is here.

The accompanying description is below:

¨This piece is entirely made of dots. Each dot is the size of the tip of a pin. I referenced a 12in x 12in photo that I gridded out into over 10,000 squares. I used a large master grid for each 19in x 24in sheet of paper. There are 9 total sheets of paper that are glued onto a 5ft x 5ft canvas. Then I panted black around the image. This piece began as a dream. It was all about me. I wanted to prove to myself that I was a good artist and If I could capture what Michelangelo was able to capture in his "Pieta" and the public responded to it then i could call myself a good artist. As the piece progressed it became less and less about me and more and more about you the viewer until it was nothing about me and entirely about you the viewer. Along the way many people told me I was wasting my time, that they had real jobs and received regular pay checks. I missed out on many family outings and time away from my 2 yr old. The time away from my little guy was the hardest part. Time began running out even though I was working 70 hrs a week. I had to rely solely on my faith to finish, One night a quote came over the radio that said God will not tell you to start something and not be with you to finish it. God was the one that told me to work on my art again, so I knew that as long as I kept working and stayed strong in my faith I would finish. After over 1500 hours I did. I finished Monday and my husband and I left Tues to install the piece at Vander Hyde in Grand Rapids, MI.

Michelangelo made her face a window to the past. She is young and looking down at her little boy remembering the future that foretold to her. I make Jesus's foot a window to the future. By stopping the piece at his foot his foot is solid and planted on the ground. So even though he is lying there slain he will get back up again, I prayed that with every dot there would be a drop of God's glory to reach out to people. I hope my work was able to effect your life in someway. It was my "True Love" of art and Christ that kept me going to finish and it was God's "True Love" for you that He gave his only Son.¨
