Zagreb... well worth a visit

... a nice mini documentary re the tourism boom/boost for people visiting Zagreb... here. Having spent quite a bit of time there myself I can heartily recommend it for the food and the wine. However, when I was there it was post civil war and one of the cafe streets was famous for girls walking arm in arm up and down the street. Why? It was known locally as ´sniper alley´ and by walking quickly with linked arms, if one of them was shot they could help each other. I even have a photograph of a McDonalds in Zagreb which had a sign on the door showing things you were not allowed to bring in. This included boom boxes, pets, and guns... It is much nicer there now.

One of the most memorable meals I had was when my taxi driver took me to the mountains for a meal of lamb (the whole thing (peeled) hung over an open wood fire with a pan to catch the fat below for basting) and spring onions. The meat is bought by the Kg, with a side order of smoked goats cheese with fresh herbs, and the whole lot washed down with one of the local version of non-tourist Slivovitz (plum brandy) in large quantities. If you want to know what is wrong with being drunk... ask a glass of water as Prostetnic Bogon Jeltz would say.
