Doing things on a small scale... as someone who cooks regularly, formerly lived in the UK, now in mainland Europe, and married to an American, the variation in recipe quantities used/required can make your head hurt after a while. I recently purchased a set of scales that, with the press of a button, solves the problem for me. Once you know what a ´cup´ of something weighs it cuts out the messy process of using an American cup to measure things like butter for example. The NYT has a n interesting article on scales in the kitchen here.
