Apparently the average is FIFTY gallons per person per year!!!!
The US Department of Agriculture has a wonderful tool for mapping their food data along with other relevant social indicators. Here.
There are a few minor issues with the map navigation (e.g. not all counties seem to be displayed) but right clicking on a county provides a wealth of other information of interest.
