Apparently, the term "Rule of thumb" comes from the sixteen hundreds and was an expression arising from carpenters using their thumbs as a consistent measuring device. You can visualise this as a man looking down a plank of wood with spectacles if you like but it is not likely to help... more from Wikipedia here.
